“Tornado!” he yelled, yanking the plug in the bath and watching as the water spiralled down the drain. He never read The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

A Wonderful Way To Go
@thephatbunny, April 22, 2009

Sinking deep into the delicious, viscous fluid he drank it in; he inhaled it; he filled his lungs with it. Death by chocolate.

He had Orwell on his toilet tank along with an ashtray and a bottle of lube. He cleaned his chandelier daily. It was her legacy.

She Was a Whirlwind

NEWS: Live Nanofic Feed via Twitter

The observant among you may have noticed a new “Page” linked in the sidebar of the site. The link says “Nanofics on Twitter” and points to this page.

What’s on this page is a live feed of Twitter posts tagged #nanofic. This means that you can go there and see some of the recent NanoFic stories that people have been sharing via Twitter. You can even login to your Twitter account on the page and write a NanoFic of your own! (Just be sure to include the #nanofic hashtag so other people can see your nanofic once you’ve posted it.)

For more information about what NanoFic is and how it works, see my earlier post here.

The Twitter plugin is provided by Tweetizen.

NEWS: Nanofic Friday

As you may have determined by the nature of this website, I love microfiction. There’s something exciting and fresh about stories told in so few words.

Since I started writing for this site, though, I’ve been exploring some other options for microfiction, including different ways to deliver it. One of the most interesting options I’ve come up with uses Twitter as a new delivery method for fiction.

Twitter allows people to post updates and share links with one another, 140 characters at a time. This character limit is designed to allow users to interact with each other via SMS (text messages) using their cellphones. I’ve been using Twitter for several months now, and I’ve been using it as a platform for microfiction for the past week or so. I refer to Twitter-based microfiction as “nanofiction” and tag the stories with “#nanofic” so that it is easy to find using the Twitter Search page. Tagging the stories this way actually reduces the number of useable characters for a story to 131.

So far I haven’t spotted anyone else using Twitter in this way, but I’d love to see more people get involved! Just write a story in 131 characters or less and tag it with “#nanofic” so that we can find your posts using www.search.twitter.com.

Since not everyone uses Twitter, I will be taking two or three of my favourite nanofics every week and posting them to www.FiftyWordStories.com on “Nanofic Fridays.” The nanofics will not be replacing Friday’s fifty-word story; instead, they’ll be complementing it.

I hope you enjoy the nanofics! Let me know what you think of them, and get involved by writing some yourself!
