“Go on,” chirped Mama. “You are ready to fly.”
“Who’s my brave fledgling?” she cooed, as he jumped.
“Try again,” she squawked, when he tumbled and thrashed.
“That’s it!” she trilled as he glided.
The chick caught the wind and soared out of sight.
Softly, Mama cooed, “Please come back.”
Joanna Alexandra Norland is a UK-based playwright and writing coach. She is a soon to be empty nester incubating dozens of writing projects.
Too true!
Well done! And isn’t that the way! Waiting for the day to finally arrive, and then there is silence! But adventure awaits for empty nester and that flying creature finding their wings!
Ah yes, we want them to make it on their own. But, the cost is conflict between joy and loss. Excellent!
Sometimes they leave the nest too soon.
Sadness, pride, and joy all at the same time. I love this. So relatable.
