Infants in car seats reach up, playing with invisible beings. Baby radiation causes the attraction, but it’s temporary. When babies wail, it’s when the entities leave. They kick and holler, wave to attract another batch.

Parents—driving, talking on the phone, listening to music, sipping hot coffee—have no clue.

They call it beach nourishment, dredge sand off the ocean floor, and push it through a pipeline to shore.

He lost a house in the hurricane that took the beach. That took his son. But the misplaced sand doesn’t make anything right. It’s nothing but bait for the next storm.

The device whispers sweet gossip, swaps intimacies, but in the family tradition, the reflected image is never flattering enough. Like Mom, when cracked by disappointment, she doubles down on dessert.

Some men have sculled from troubled boys, and are still sunken in their sorrow, trapped in turmoil. Immaturity laps up against the gunwales of machismo, as oars clack rippled distress toward distant shores. It’s not their fault! Women accept or reject them, by math and manner mysterious, to different ends.

The eyes have it, above the masks, in a store less crowded, a town away. No one I know here, but recognizable–the eyes wide and searching and sometimes scared–because I see those same eyes in the mirror when I try on the mask, to see how I look.

The bird that pecked holes below the bedroom window was back, drawn by the vibrations from the space heater. Ed rolled to face what had been Emily’s side. The cat, who purred as soon as you made eye contact, stared back. Wide-awake, they listened to the drumming of the bird.
