The man shouted, “Gentlemen, start your engines!”
They were off! They turned left at every curve; his carrot was in reach.
There was the finish line.
One car stood between him and his dream.
The opponent finished first with him only half an inch behind.
He was the first loser.

“the first loser.”
Oh how often I have felt that way!
As a Nascar fan, this is so true. Not only in Nascar, but in our own lives.
Very clever! With a humorous twist at the end! The race…. And the “place” in the race…. We can all identify.
The story is a good indictment of the type of sickness that has enveloped many sports these days when everyone is a loser unless they win. It made me think back to when it used to be that coming second or third was pretty damn good and you were lucky to be chosen to compete at all. I remember seeing an Olympic athlete in recent years crying because she got a silver medal. She was so ungrateful it was sickening. Instead of feeling sorry for her I thought she got what she deserved except of course she probably shouldn’t have gotten any medals at all. I liked the story for shinning a light on this whether intentionally or unintentionally. Well done!
