The Wand’ring Man

Australia, the young man knew,
Held many things for him to do

And proud Brazil, whose flag was green,
Was filled with things that he had seen

He’d studied well the Paris streets
Some day, he said, he’d visit Greece

A wanderer, he called himself
Exploring books upon his shelf

To Live in Peace, Plant Potatoes, and Dream

“Tonight we shall incur the esteem of our ancestors!” bellowed King Tawnyfeathers as his eager army growled in anticipation.

But his heart wasn’t in this fight. He wished he were lying in his garden, gazing at the clouds, interred in the earth he had cultivated.

Ah, to be a potato…

Lie-Baby

“Aww, where’s mommy?” they teased. “Is baby homesick?”

And she dried her tears and lied to them.

“I’m not homesick,” she shouted, and that wasn’t the lie.

“I don’t care about my mommy,” she protested, and that wasn’t the lie.

“Leave me alone!” she screamed, and that was the lie.

She shrieked as a horrible, misshapen little creature squirmed out of her grocery bag and flopped itself, half-formed lungs heaving, onto the floor.

Kill it! cried her husband, but pity stayed her hand.

A bond formed between them,
and though it was built on only moments,
it lasted;
it remained.
