STORY OF THE MONTH: June 2018

The Story of the Month is chosen from the Story of the Week winners announced from the past month.

The finalists for June were:

Camino by Rosemary Boyd
Spider Legs by Jo Withers
22nd Century Jury (a reverse story) by Alanah Andrews
A Dozen Irons in the Fire by Bob Thurber
Dependency by Carrie Backer

The winner of the June 2018 Story of the Month, and the $10 prize, is…

Dependency

As Beverly Lucey put it in a comment, Carrie created such a rich ending, with the character facing a crucial choice (one he has obviously had to make many times in the past), layered with a hint at salvation (the bread and wine evoking communion). Add the dual meaning of the title, and Carrie has built a strong idea into a powerful moment.

STORY OF THE WEEK: June 17

The story of the week for June 11 to 15 is…

A Dozen Irons in the Fire by Bob Thurber
and
22nd Century Jury by Alanah Andrews

Bob’s story was so powerful, and Alanah’s concept so innovative, that I felt both had to be rewarded!

STORY OF THE MONTH: May 2018

The Story of the Month is chosen from the Story of the Week winners announced from the past month.

The finalists for May were:

Home Security by Mark Farley
To the Grave by Melanie Cranenburgh
Missing River by Eileen Brennan McIntyre
The Art of Disappearing by Patrick Mc Loughlin

The winner of the May 2018 Story of the Month, and the $10 prize, is…

The Art of Disappearing

Patrick used incredibly rich language to paint a picture of the character who has been cut off from the world. The subtlety is impressive, with so much story around the edges. Even the character’s name seems to have been intentionally chosen as part of the image created in the reader’s mind.
