  1. Great story! The marvelous little turn at the end made me smile. Plus the clever use of the website maven’s name is a seriously good idea (nice touch). However, I’m not sure the legend of Santa would agree he “favors” the wealthy, but it’s only a small distraction to a cleverly crafted little story. Let us hope Santa gets you what you want in three months, and perhaps less homework in 2015!

  2. I think the reference was to Tiny Tim a character in Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’. A Christmas Carol’ was written with a strong nostalgia for old Christmas traditions – to make it a time of merriment as it used to be. Dickens was commenting on the dichotomy of ‘rich and poor’. I also think the father’s comment above meant that Christmas like everything else favours the rich as they always have more than the poor. The coal seems to predate most Christmas traditions.

I would be interested to know if the story was indeed inspired by Dickens.

    1. Indeed, it was. I loved “A Christmas Carol”–the local production and most recent movie. This is my favorite story of the ones I have submitted.
