I seem to read it differently from other commentators: to me the ‘cheap rum [as] his holy wine’ implies darker tensions in Edwin, a retreat into alcoholism as self-medication for the maternally enforced constraints, nevertheless along side the sanctity of his every day life. Wonderful to get so much (and more) into your 50 words.
