  1. Simple, elegant and so relevant today as we lose more of the natural world to poorly planned development, greed, and, of course, climate change. Like the two paragraph structure and the ‘punch’ at the end which was not what I expected.

  2. You created a wonderful visual with so few words. I felt quietly sad that you would lose your beautiful tree.

  3. Giulietta,
So well said and so true. This happened to a small grove of beautiful trees in our neighbour’s yard. I was horrified to wake up one morning to the sound of chainsaws and witnessed the last one falling. I cried. When I approached the woman and asked why she had chopped the five healthy large trees down, she said they were messy!!! I was so angry that I immediately planted a large fast growing Leyland Cypress tree on our side of the fence! It will grow to between fifty to seventy feet in less than ten years. Perhaps not the most mature way to handle the situation but I too am devastated by the loss of trees on our Island. To counter my rather childish retaliation I signed on with a conservation group and we helped to save a 23-acre parcel of 2nd growth trees as an Eagle Sanctuary right across the street from our houses. I wonder what she thinks about the very messy forest which is to be left by decree in its natural state. So there!

    1. Hi Jennifer! I like your story about planting some massive trees in the wake of the ones that were executed. In fact, I think it would make a great 50 or 100 word story … Conservation group sounds awesome. Thank you!

  4. Hi Julie! It’s amazing for me to think how so few words can conjure up so many happy thoughts and memories … and then … just like that … how the sadness of losing it all can make it all disappear so quickly.
