KEYLA CAMPBELL: Mother

My heart still pounds when I think of her.
The screaming. The hitting. The abandoning.
She lays here in front of me and my heart still pounds.
But now she’s old, weak, fragile.
The hospital machines beep as she breathes.
Her heart pounds slower and slower.
And I forgive her.

  1. My best friend’s wife was severely treated by her late father but alway ends her negative comments about him with positive ones; he made her self sufficient at an early age. Thanks for your story

    1. I’m sorry to hear this but it’s nice to hear others relating to the same situation. Makes you feel less alone. Thank you for reading my story :)

  2. I love the use of the word ‘pounds’ multiple times. It shows how relentless and unending it all must have felt. Excellent! (from one RI-lander to another)…

    1. Yes! When I was writing it I felt my heart pounding just thinking of the past. It felt right repeating that word. Thank you so much for your comment fellow Rhode Islander! :)
