STORY OF THE WEEK: August 8

The story of the week for August 3 to 7 is…

Abducting Abby by Quentin Norris

Truly creative ideas are few and far between, and this is one of the instances that really caught me up in its imagination and let me wander around in the world it had created.

STORY OF THE MONTH: July 2015

The Story of the Month is chosen from the Story of the Week winners announced from the past month.

The finalists for July were:

Spare Some Change by Jeffrey Albright
Snowflake by Ramit Das
Mr. Moon by Dan Niederloh
The Call by SD Curran
Where Does the Time Go? by Damien Sebouhian

The winner of the July 2015 Story of the Month, and the $10 prize, is…

Mr. Moon

With this story, Dan evoked something in me that a 50-word story had never actually made me feel before: terror. This was the kind of stay-with-you horror scene that usually requires much more lead-up and suspense to deliver. A fantastic piece of work.

STORY OF THE WEEK: August 1

The story of the week for July 27 to 31 is…

Where Does the Time Go? by Damian Sebouhian

There were some strong parent/child stories last week, and this one stood out as my favourite. Maybe I’m just a softie as I wait for my third son to arrive…

STORY OF THE WEEK: July 11 and 18

Editor: I missed last week’s Story of the Week! Oops! Both of the winners for the last two weeks are presented below.

The story of the week for July 6 to 10 is…

Snowflake by Ramit Das

Beautiful artistry and implied character building. Good work, Ramit!

The story of the week for July 13 to 17 is…

Mr. Moon by Daniel Niederloh

I found this story legitimately terrifying. I’m not sure I ever experienced that from a 50-word story before. It demanded my emotional investment, and is a worthy weekly winner.

STORY OF THE WEEK: July 4

The story of the week for June 29 to July 3 is…

Spare Some Change by Jeffrey Albright

Every now and then, a character is built so well that their story simply through a physical description. It’s very rare, and very difficult to pull off, but Jeffrey has done just that.

STORY OF THE MONTH: June 2015

The Story of the Month is chosen from the Story of the Week winners announced from the past month.

The finalists for June were:

Head Case by Mark Farley
These Things Are Yours by Bob Thurber
Catching Up With a Friend by Connell Wayne Regner
Thunderclap by Sarah Scott

The winner of the June 2015 Story of the Month, and the $10 prize, is…

Head Case

Mark constructed one of the most unique characters I’ve seen in a 50-word story–and I’m not talking about the corpse! Brilliantly imaginative and unexpected. Congratulations, Mark!

STORY OF THE WEEK June 20

The story of the week for June 15 to 19 is…

Catching Up With a Friend by Connell Wayne Regner

I definitely didn’t see the twist in this story coming, so it hit me hard. Strong work from a regular contributor.

STORY OF THE WEEK: June 13

The story of the week for June 8 to 12 is…

These Things Are Yours by Bob Thurber

What an amazing encapsulation of a character’s back story and relationships in a single moment, a single act. Another great contribution from Mr. Thurber.
