POLL: How Often Should 50WS Post Stories Going Forward?

As we head into a new year of 50WS, I’m exploring some different options for ways to improve the site. For a long time we’ve been sharing one story per day, every weekday, but I’m open to other arrangements. We spent a few weeks posting two stories every weekday, and that seemed to go over well. There are other options, too.

I’d love to hear what you, as readers, would prefer. Please vote on the poll below, and leave comments to tell me what you think!

Thanks for an awesome 2013, everyone, and here’s to an even better 2014!

ROAR!!

Get ready for an event of Jurassic proportions! I’m excited to announce the Prehistoric Prose contest.

This contest will be open to your entries from November 3, 2013, until November 23, 2013. The theme for the contest is: prehistory. That means all submitted stories must have something to do with dinosaurs, sabretooth tigers, cavemen, or a similar theme from that era.

Prizes

Fifty-Word Stories: Volume OneContest winners will be chosen by Tim Sevenhuysen, 50WS editor. The five best stories received will be posted to the site from November 25 to 29.

The author of the best story, which will be posted on November 29, will receive a print copy of their choice of Fifty-Word Stories: Volume One or Volume Two.

The authors of the four runner-up stories, posted from November 25 to 28, will each receive an ebook copy of their choice of Volume One or Volume Two.

Contest Rules

  • To be eligible for this contest, stories must be received between November 3 and 23, 2013.
  • Stories must be related to the theme of “prehistoric”. Stories not related to this theme will not be considered for a prize, but may be considered for later publication on the site.
  • Submit your entry or entries to tim@fiftywordstories.com. (Limit two story submissions per writer. Please send each story in a separate email. Story should be pasted into the body of the email.)

I’m super excited to read a ton of stories about dinosaurs and cavemen and all sorts of cool prehistoric stuff! Let your imaginations run wild…

NEWS: “Summer Stories” Contest – Prizes Galore!

In the past month or two, I’ve been receiving more and more submissions. My inbox is so full I don’t know how I’m ever going to catch up to everything that’s been sent in! So, what’s the best way to deal with the situation? Invite a bunch more submissions, of course, and offer free books and discounts!

The Summer Stories contest will be open to your entries from July 21, 2013, until August 10, 2013. The theme for the contest is: camping or picnic. All submitted stories must be related to one or both of these themes. Beyond that, the world is your oyster! (Or, given the theme, perhaps the world is your anthill?)

I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with. We have some very talented regular submitters that I’m sure I’ll hear from, and I know there are some equally talented readers out there who maybe just need some encouragement to throw their hat in the ring. Well, there’s no better time than now! Get writing!

NEWS: Christmas Break

Sorry for the radio silence this week, everyone. It’s been hard to spare a moment of my vacation time to think about the site. But we’ll be back to regularly scheduled updates next week (hopefully)!

NEWS: Call for Holiday-Themed Submissions

It’s December, that special month where a variety of different celebrations happen and we spend time with our families and give gifts and whatnot.

So why not send in some holiday-themed stories so 50WS can join in the festivities?

If you have a story about Christmas, Hannukah, or even Festivus, I want to see it!

As always, you can submit your stories by email to tim@fiftywordstories.com. Full submission guidelines can be found on the Submissions page.

NEWS: Continued Apologies

I’d like to again apologize for the inconsistency on the site for the past couple of weeks. I’m on a business trip and working 12+ hour days, and I’ve just been forgetting to schedule stories in between working my overtime and having Skype conversations with my wife and son back home…

Next week should be better. I’m going to prepare the full week’s worth of stories in advance (what an intriguing concept!).

Sorry again!

NEWS: Today’s Missing Story

I apologize for the lack of a story today. My only excuse is that with the new job I’m preparing for, which includes a cross-province move, my attention has been thoroughly divided, and I simply forgot to approve and schedule something from my slush pile of submissions.

By the time I realized that I’d forgotten, it was already almost noon, so I decided it would be better not to do a disservice to a guest writer by giving their story only half a day of exposure. I’ll do my best to make sure that there are no further omissions in the coming weeks, though continued transitions and associated busyness make it difficult for me to promise perfection on that front.

Thank you for your understanding.

Back-to-School Contest – Win free books and ebooks!

It’s contest time again, which  means you’ve got a chance to win some great prizes by sending in your stories!

This time around, I’m looking for stories based on a Back-to-School theme. Interpret that however you want, as long as there’s some connection with school or the autumn season.

Prizes!

What kind of contest would this be without prizes?

There are five prizes available for the Back-to-School contest.

  • The author of the best Artistic Story will receive a print copy of Fifty-Word Stories: Volume One and an ebook of their choice from my Store, as well as publication on FiftyWordStories.com.
  • The author of the best Humourous Story will receive a print copy of Fifty-Word Stories: Volume Two and an ebook of their choice from my Store, as well as publication on FiftyWordStories.com.
  • Three runners-up will receive an ebook of their choice from my Store, as well as publication on FiftyWordStories.com.

Contest Rules and Submission Details

Send your stories by email to tim@fiftywordstories.com. Please send each story in a separate email. Include the title of the story in the subject line of the email and copy the story itself into the body of the email. Please limit your entries to three stories per author.

The submission period starts now and is open until Saturday, September 1. Winners will be revealed during the week of September 3 to 7.

Stories will be judged by Tim Sevenhuysen.

Stories not chosen to receive prizes may still be featured on the site at a later date.

NEWS: Guest Week, April 2 – 6

This coming week I’ll be posting five stories from guest writers, and won’t be writing any stories myself. Why? Because my wife is due to give birth on April 3!

We can’t pinpoint exactly when she’ll go into labour, of course, but it’s likely to be some time next week. I have lots of great submissions waiting to be shared, so I thought this would be a good time to get some more of them out there, and save myself a little bit of time and work at the same time so I don’t have to worry about keeping up with things whenever Larissa feels the baby start to worm its way out. (That’s how giving birth works, right?)

Enjoy the great lineup of submissions next week! I know I’ve enjoyed reading and vetting them.
