ANTHONY WILHOIT: Blood and Steel

December 1, 2017Artistic, SubmissionsAnthony Wilhoit, automation, robots, science fictionTim

The Robotic Revolution was celebrated by some.

I received six rejection notifications today. My feet pounded the pavement from door to door in search of work. The stipend I receive feeds my family, but not much else.

Everywhere I’m met with the same message. “Now Hiring: Humans Need Not Apply.”

Anthony works with numbers by day and words by night. Happily married in the heart of Kentucky.

HARRIS COVERLEY: In a Pickle

November 30, 2017Amusing, SubmissionsHarris Coverley, oops, trying new thingsTim

Holly never cooked or prepared anything, so when I found some eggs pickling in a jar in her kitchen I was surprised.

“What’s with the eggs?” I asked.

“Just tryin’ something out,” she replied.

I didn’t have the heart to tell her you’re not supposed to leave the shells on.

KSENIA BEZVIKONNAYA: Never Grow Up

November 30, 2017Amusing, Submissions, Top Stories, Touchingchild, Ksenia Bezvikonnaya, parent, time fliesTim

He smiled while his baby was tapping something on his phone. Children are nearly born with it…

He still tried to sustain her, though she moved perfectly herself. He couldn’t get over it.

“I’ve fixed the connection,” his daughter said. “Incidentally, I got a promotion, so I can move out.”

Ksenia is a beginning Russian journalist with a sense of proportion.

SUSAN WACKERBARTH: Alone again, naturally

November 29, 2017Submissions, Touchingbreakup, loss, mistakes, relationship, Susan WackerbarthTim

“Goodbye Patrick.” Cindy moved in for a half-hug and cheek-peck, but he held her until she pulled away.

Patrick fit bulging duffel bags into her rusty Mazda, shut the hatchback, then stepped away as she reversed and turned.

The car crunched down the gravel driveway, red taillights glowing in accusation.

Susan Wackerbarth is enjoying her foray into flash fiction so much that she may never go back to writing novels.

ANGELICA A OLUOCH: Un-education

November 29, 2017Artistic, SubmissionsAngelica A. Oluoch, identity, racismTim

“No, they do not teach you in school. They don’t teach you how to find the art in your name, and how to speak of that art. No, they don’t teach you to love your beautiful warm, brown hands.

“They only teach you to love black on everything but yourself.”

Angelica is a Kenyan writer who seeks to educate the world about the New Afrika she grew up and lives in, through the stories she weaves.

MATTHEW WEIGELT: Living Again

November 28, 2017Artistic, Submissions, TouchingMark Farley, Matthew Weigelt, memory, music, Tamsin SeymourTim

The boy gently accepted the withered violin, taking the neck. And holding the bow, he felt a sizzle, like the hot fence at his uncle’s house.

The violin lifted, fitted under his chin. The bow dragged his arm toward the strings. The pair met again in his arms and sang.

Matthew Weigelt is an author and journalist, a photographer and drone pilot. This story is a follow-up to Tamsin Seymour’s Lost Chords and Unbowed.

E.O. HARGREAVES: Stay

November 28, 2017Amusing, Artistic, Submissionsarsonist, desperate measures, E.O. Hargreaves, funny, relationship, twistTim

In the deadest hour of night, a tangerine-colored torrent arrives.

My girlfriend’s terrified; I drag her half-clothed from the blanket to shield her from the forest’s scathing flames. Wholeheartedly she clings to me, though I know only yesterday her eyes wandered.

Somewhere deep in my pocket, the matchbox shifts restlessly.

EO’s fairly certain that arson isn’t the way to a woman’s heart. It’s probably bacon or something. Unless she’s vegan. Then maybe it’s veggie bacon.

PATRICK YU: Love, part 5

November 27, 2017Artistic, Poetry, Submissionsbreakup, fading, over, Patrick Yu, poem, relationshipTim

Our red eyes
Entwined
Trust me
Have a glass of wine
I love you…
words without conviction
Your eyes
Trace the floor
The corners
Of our room
My plea fails you
Our relationship fades
Our bond snaps
Nothing is
Holding you
The door closes
Tossed between empty sheets
It’s over

Why part 5?

TAMSIN SEYMOUR: 60˚ N

November 27, 2017Artistic, Submissionsescape, madness, research, Tamsin Seymour, winterTim

She came for the gaping sky and arctic terns. But winter is slowly encasing the huts, the interminable statistics, the bickering. And the birds have gone.

Shedding her coat and boots to lighten the load, she steps into the snow, migrating south.

Despite only being 51˚ N, Tamsin is also dreading winter.
