ALISON V KING: Old Hands

September raged outside, violent bursts of russet and gold. Her tiny hand made a fist around my finger. “We’re in this together,” she said without words.

Different hospital. Different decade. The ache is deep and I am sinking. Papery fingers entwined. “We’re in this together,” she says without words.

Always.

Alison has been writing since she was old enough to hold a pen. Her first story was a horrible island romance scribbled at the tender age of eight. She has recently been featured in Firewords Quarterly and Journeyman Magazine and hopes to one day remain seated long enough to produce a novel.

ANN SANGWIN: Silence

He stands where his father put him, white faced, tears staining his cheeks, little fists clenched at his side, listening to the silence. His mother’s stifled screams, moans, and sobs have stopped.

He is trembling, frozen with fear, eyes fixed on the belt hanging on the back of the door.

Ann Sangwin is a retired teacher, now a career grandmother. She has written all her life but until recently has not thought of submitting for publication. She lives in Kent, where she recently joined a writing group which has changed her life.

Reality became clearer as the epidural lost its grip on her. She looked down at her beautiful creation, counting ten fingers and ten toes.

The room was bursting with happiness for the new addition to their family.

Her heart shriveled as she handed over her baby to his new mother.

I could do no more for her body, which had progressed from lithe toddler to this wooden being, joints forever locked.

Eye contact. We were transported together beyond Earth, beyond time, somewhere beyond… Then back in the clinic, stunned.

Dad quietly stated, “She does that to me all the time.”

ERIC WHITE: Blackwater Pond

The pool is small in diameter, but its water is solid black. Its emptiness echoes through me.

In my dreams I’m always a child, accidentally crashing my bike into the black water pond.

Now I stand at its edge as a fully grown man, and I’m ready to dive in.

Even here in the basement, I still hear the siren wailing in the distance. Mom went with the others to make sure it was safe outside for me.

I’m nine, ten next month, so I wanted to come, but she told me to wait.

That was yesterday.

KIERAN IVISON: Mitten

I lost my favorite mitten this morning.

My dog tried to eat it and choked on it. He couldn’t see very well from all the smoke in the air. My parents wouldn’t have either, but they slept through it.

Now I’m outside, and it’s really cold. I miss my mitten.

So You Gave Birth to a Dinosaur

“So you say you gave birth to a… dinosaur.”

“Yes, doctor.”

“And that’s him, there? He looks quite normal to me.”

“He’s a dinosaur, really!”

“Well, if he is a dinosaur, when I place my finger in his mouth he should—HE BIT MY HAND OFF!!”

“I told you so.”

Vegetarian Roommate

“There’s a monster under my bed!” whimpered Sophie.

“I know,” said Mom. “I put it there. It likes dark places.”

“Won’t it come out at night and eat me!?”

“No, it’s a vegetarian.”

Sophie put fresh heads of lettuce under her bed every day for the rest of her life.

She literally stood on her head trying to impress Dad enough for one sincere compliment.

But he just smiled and said she was “gym-nasty,” so she jumped off the balance beam and tackled him and they both laughed, and he still didn’t seem to understand why she practiced so hard.
