In the Forever Moment

Certain facial expressions can instantly bring a lump into your throat. Certain phrases can tie a knot in your stomach.

“I hate to have to tell you this…”
“I’m really sorry, but…”
“Why don’t you sit down.”

Then comes a forever moment, shaped like all your deepest fears.

Take heart.

Kitten Blanket

Kittens! Kittens everywhere!

It was terrifying. Mortifying. A nightmare.

She stifled a scream. Then she stifled a yawn.

The warm, cuddly kitten bodies, like a soft, purring blanket, lulled her, despite her best efforts, off to sleep. And as she slept, she dreamed about the tigers that ate her mom.

She Didn’t Like Surprises

Cowering under a table, Lee listened and waited.

They were coming.

Lee saw their socked feet move through the kitchen, past her hiding place. They stopped outside her bedroom door…

…then flung it open, shouting, “Surprise! Happy Birthday!”

She stifled a scream, scrambled out from under the table, and fled.
