From the other room I hear Marcus coming home. I flinch as the door slams.
I start over.

He sits on the park bench, remembering her.
Not long ago, she was by his side.

If you stare long enough, you can see the boy he used to be.

He smiles at me and I at him.
His, an unspoken invitation; mine, a polite offering.

I quicken my pace.

Last call.

A silent man still sat at the mahogany bar, hours after ordering a single drink, still staring at his scotch glass, yet to take a single sip.

His eyes were cold and sober. “I’m done,” he muttered to himself. “I’ve had my last drink.”

And then he left.
