AMANDA QUINN: Childhood

March 3, 2021Artistic, SubmissionsAmanda Quinn, childhood, extremes, the prince and the pauperTim

He grew up in a jigsaw puzzle. A Christmas card. A tea shop watercolour. I grew up in a news report. An episode of The Bill. A photography exhibition of burning cars and women in bulky coats pushing tartan shopping trolleys through rubble. It was hell for both of us.

Amanda Quinn lives in the North East of England where she works as a freelance writer and tutor. Her writing has been published by Shooter Literary Magazine, Open Pen, Ellipsis Zine, Butcher’s Dog, and Spelk Fiction among others. She can be found online at amandaquinn.co.uk and on Twitter at @amandaqwriter.

YASH SEYEDBAGHERI: Happy

March 3, 2021Artistic, Submissionsbad news, happiness, ignoring the news media, Yash SeyedbagheriTim

They say I’m too happy. Too happy about the full moon shimmering, butter-colored lamps flickering, Tchaikovsky waltzes.

They devour graphic news, grimaces flicked on with ease.

I smile at train horns. Lit windows.

Grow up.

I bat them away. Bury the news. It peeks out.

My smile weakens. A little.

Yash Seyedbagheri is a graduate of Colorado State University’s MFA program. His stories, “Soon,” “How To Be A Good Episcopalian,” and “Tales From A Communion Line,” were nominated for Pushcarts. Yash’s work has been published in The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts, Write City Magazine, and Ariel Chart, among others.

ROBERT MARKOVICH: Bonkers

March 2, 2021Amusing, Submissions, Top Stories, Touchingmissed connections, regret, Robert MarkovichTim

Let me tell you what insanity is.

It’s remembering a conversation with someone you met on the train forty years ago. It’s seeing her expression as you got off without asking for her number. It’s driving to her station for a week and not finding her. It’s having stopped looking.

Robert Markovich spent a lifetime in what is charitably referred to as service journalism, writing and editing stories about everything from cars to toilets, most recently at Consumer Reports. He is happily and gratefully retired.

BOB THURBER: Living with Anxiety Disorder on a hot rainy day during a pandemic

March 2, 2021Artistic, Poetry, SubmissionsBob Thurber, Covid-19, living in your own head, mental health, poemTim

Besides the hum of the air conditioner and the murmur of the rain and the sound of the TV there’s the constant noise in my head, a continuous commotion of charged thoughts unraveling mixed feelings and knotted memories, each a clump of snarled hair worked aggressively with a fine-toothed comb.

Bob Thurber is the author of six books. Regarded as a master of Flash and Micro Fiction, his work has appeared in Esquire and other magazines, been anthologized 60 times, received a long list of awards, and been utilized in schools and colleges throughout the world. He resides in Massachusetts. Visit his website at BobThurber.net.

DAVE ZACKER: The Haunted Surfboard

March 1, 2021Amusing, Submissionsannoying, Dave Zacker, funny, ghost, surfingTim

The garage-sale guy took $5 for his old, banged up surfboard.

First time out, I wiped out big when two bloody skeleton hands gripped the board from the underside and flipped it, and a glowing skull popped out of the water and laughed at me.

My girlfriend garage-saled the board for $10!

Dave and his wife, Kate, moved from sunny California to historic Pennsylvania. He enjoys writing among the pristine farmlands, but he misses the blue Pacific and In N Out. His previous stories have appeared in Fifty Word Stories.

The boy waited in the big maple tree for his father, who’d be right outside. Half an hour. Then a full.

So the boy jumped and mangled his arm.

Father had a call. It was important, which the boy understood, and his mother was more help in these situations anyways.

He then moved to Altamonte Springs, just outside Orlando, with his girlfriend and their two dogs. SL BOWEN: No Secrets

February 26, 2021Artistic, Submissionsaffair, guilt, S.L. Bowen, secretTim

The widow and her husband’s erstwhile friend met to plan the memorial service, discussing arrangements over cocktails in the courtyard of a lovely inn.

Did he ever suspect? the friend asked. A sudden gust of wind tore rose petals loose. They landed on the lovers like bloody tears.

S.L. Bowen has had work published in The George Mason Review, Writer’s Work, and 50-Word Stories.
