MARK FARLEY: No one cares until it looks difficult

January 15, 2018Amusing, Submissionscraving attention, funny, getting credit, Mark Farley, pilotTim

Barry didn’t need to make the announcement about turbulence
or flick the seatbelt light on early
or shake the column hard enough to make the wings flex
or force the wheels to thump on touchdown,
but he’d worked hard for his qualifications
and felt he deserved a round of applause.

Mark Farley writes novels, flash fiction and the occasional poem. See more at mumbletoes.blogspot.com.

ADELE MacDONALD: The Dog Who Loved Too Much

January 15, 2018Adventure, SubmissionsAdele MacDonald, Atlantic Ocean, loyalty, perseverance, ScotlandTim

The Scottish Highlanders had to leave.

As they sailed out of the harbor, their dogs swam alongside their ships, not understanding.

Most turned back. But one strong dog, who loved too much, would not.

After many miles and waves, a ship pulled that dog aboard for the long journey west.

Adele has loved many dogs. She is sure that at least one of them was descended from the dog that loved too much.

BALÁZS PAPP: Sweet Revenge

January 12, 2018Amusing, SubmissionsBalázs Papp, chef, funny, twistTim

They said he couldn’t do it. They said it was impossible for him to become a confectioner. He’d failed culinary school over and over again.

But here he was, baking a cake for the Chief Examiner. He let out a happy sigh as he slipped the poison into the pastry.

Balázs Papp is a 16 years old student in Hungary, he plays soccer, (or football if you will), enjoys dancing, and in his free time, he occasionally writes short stories or poems. He apologizes for any grammatical mistake made on his behalf.

EDDIE and ANNA MOORE: The Waiting Room

January 12, 2018Amusing, Submissions, Touchinganecdote, dementia, Eddie and Anna Moore, funny, sad, slice of lifeTim

The old lady nudged the bearded man beside her, and asked, “Do you remember my brother?”

“What?” He replied.

“My brother. Do you remember my brother?”

The old man sighed. “I am your brother! I’ve told you a million times.”

The old woman appeared doubtful. “My brother wasn’t that ugly.”

Eddie & Anna are a father-daughter team that enjoys dreaming up stories and hashing out dialogue. Sometimes they even write them down. Anna’s new to writing, but you can visit her father’s website.

ROBERTA BEACH JACOBSON: Class of 1970

January 11, 2018Amusing, Submissions, Touchingaging, life, memories, Roberta Beach JacobsonTim

Who are these senior citizens who surround me?

I see retirees decked out in bifocals and new teeth, but I remember energetic cheerleaders, state football champs, school newspaper reporters.

As we pass phones to share photos of our kids, grandchildren, and pets, we promise to meet again in 10 years.

Roberta tried retiring, but it didn’t work. See more at RobertaJacobson.com.

BL DANIELS: Slay The Beast!

January 11, 2018Adventure, Artistic, SubmissionsB.L. Daniels, communism, different kinds of beasts, twist, uprisingTim

The exhausted hero stumbled into the village square, dragging a monstrous, gruesome trophy behind him.

Onlookers gasped as he pulled the creature’s head from the stained sack. Its green eyes glimmered in the sunlight as he tossed it aloft.

It hit the ground with a wet thud.

The proletariat cheered.

Daniels is a writer of horror and weird fiction. His short stories have been featured in Corner Bar Magazine, Helix Magazine, and various anthologies. He lives in New England with his wife, kids, and a couple of devious cats. Find out more at bldaniels.wordpress.com

BROOKE RANDEL: Advanced Flexibility

January 10, 2018Submissions, Top Stories, Touchingaging, Brooke Randel, dementia, relationshipsTim

My grandma has forgotten the word for Mahjongg. She keeps asking to play yoga.

I think about what that might mean.

She’d be teacher. Her poses would have names like desserts: the rugelach, the macaroon. I’d contort myself, wobble, fall. We’d both laugh.

From the closet, I get the tiles.

Brooke Randel is a writer and copywriter in Chicago, IL. Her fiction has been published in Ropes, Two Cities Review, Punchnel’s and Beecher’s Magazine. She’s currently co-writing a memoir with her grandma.

SUSAN LOZANO: Lonely Heart

January 10, 2018Submissions, Touchingfuture, loss, memory, past, Susan LozanoTim

The clock strikes twelve. Glasses clink, the shiny ball drops, cheers all around.

In the midst of the confetti, I stand alone, champagne in hand… waiting.

Waiting for you, my love. Waiting for your kiss to signal another New Year.

My mind knows you’ve gone, but my heart still waits.

Susan Lozano wrote this story.

SARAH HAUSMAN: The New Neighborhood

January 9, 2018Artistic, Submissionscomplex, identity, neighbors, race, relationships, Sarah HausmanTim

One of the brakes on my bike is broken. It doesn’t matter. It’s flat here.

Smiling white folks wave at me from golf carts. The weather is always warm. I married up.

I wonder if I’m as good as they are. Or as bad. Maybe I’m both. But hopefully neither.

Sarah Hausman likes to keep her bio shorter than her stories. Links and updates can be found at Facebook.com/sarahhausmanwrites.
