AZARIN SADEGH: Before the Bombs Fell

March 7, 2016Artistic, SubmissionsAzarin Sadegh, bombs, descriptive, warTim

Waiting for the bombers, I turned off the light and the room floated in obscurity. We listened to the buzz of thirsty mosquitoes, the fall of spiders, and the hiss of the melting candles.

The dust whispered in the air and we went deaf, listening to the moon, shining cold.

Azarin Sadegh, a 2011 PEN USA Emerging Voices fellow, and a former student of the late Les Plesko, is working on her 100,000 word novel.

CATHY ULRICH: An Apartment on the Moon

March 4, 2016Artistic, Submissions, Top Storiesbig dreams, Cathy Ulrich, gazing at the stars, science fictionTim

Maurice buys an apartment on the moon. He calls it speculative real estate.

His friends just laugh. But, Maurice, no one goes to the moon anymore, they say. No one even wants to.

That’s all right, says Maurice, gazing up through the cloud-laden sky. At least I know it’s there.

Sometimes, Cathy Ulrich would like to live on the moon, but only when she’s feeling really antisocial. Her humor writing can be found at hollywoodhatesme.wordpress.com.

JON NIXON: Bathroom Aspirations

March 4, 2016Amusing, Submissionsfunny, genie in a bottle, Jon Nixon, low targetsTim

She wished he wouldn’t squeeze the toothpaste tube from the middle.

And that he’d refrain from leaving the toilet seat upright.

God, she wished he’d stop singing in the shower too.

She opened the bottle.

The Genie laughed knowingly. All that potential happiness, wealth, and well-being would be wasted here.

Jon is from the North West of England and works in local government, but has a background in Newspaper Journalism. He is currently enjoying writing for fun and experimenting with short written forms.

CAROL BROWNE: Everlasting Love

March 3, 2016Amusing, SubmissionsCarol Browne, funny, gross, murderer, twistTim

The day they met, he knew she was the one. She had such beautiful eyes. Now he would be able to gaze at their beauty every day for the rest of his life.

He admired them in the pickling jar, knowing her other body parts would keep in the freezer.

Carol Browne first appeared on the planet in 1954. Now living in the Cambridgeshire countryside with her cockatiel, Sparky, she is a contracted author at Burning Willow Press.

MARY STEER: The Cat’s Got Her Tongue

March 3, 2016Amusing, Submissionscat, funny, kitten, life, Mary Steer, wifeTim

They say women use 20,000 words per day. I believe it.

Since we got the kitten, my wife’s vocabulary has been reduced to “cutie pootie”, “diddy thing”, “kittiness”.

Never thought I’d say this, but I miss the old days. There were too many words, but at least there was variety.

Mary Steer finds herself mildly addicted to 50-word stories.

ALEC LAVICTOIRE: Deployed

March 2, 2016Artistic, SubmissionsAlec LaVictoire, military, relationshipTim

The postcard from Afghanistan came in the mail today. I’d given him one card for every day of his deployment.

It had been four weeks since the last one arrived.

Tears came as I read it and reread it again, searching for the words that weren’t there. “I love you.”

This is Alec’s first submission to 50-Word Stories. He resides with his wife and two young boys in Caledon Village, Ontario.

TONY AWORI: The Other Guy

March 2, 2016Submissions, Touchingcheating, emotions, relationship, Tony AworiTim

“I’m sorry.”

The human mind displays its wonder and mystery. With two words, the doubts and suspicions first cast aside rise to a thundering crescendo. Anger, despair, betrayal, and love all battle for dominance and endeavour to exert their will on the next decision, only three words:

“Who is he?”

Tony is from Nairobi, Kenya, and is currently studying business in Malaysia. He has loved reading since he was a kid and feels that writing is a fun way to be creative. In his spare time he plays the the saxophone and loves watching thriller and horror movies.

GORDON MILLER: The Chase

March 1, 2016Adventure, Submissionscave, escape, Gordon Miller, hidingTim

All I can see is the faint glow of a pulsating green light. Voices are getting louder.

The cave is damp and smells of sulphur. The purple rock glistens from the flashes of lightning and the rolling thunder echoes deep into an underground chasm.

It’s just a matter of time.

Gordon Miller is a writer living in Oakville ON. He enjoys getting ideas by writing 50 word stories. Getting them published is a bonus.

LIN JENKINSON: Single Socks

March 1, 2016Amusing, Submissionscouple, escaping, funny, laundry, Lin Jenkinson, sockTim

Driving, they came across a sock.

“Weird how there’s always one sock lying on the road. Who takes one sock off?”

“Probably trying to escape,” came the retort. “That’s why there’s always one missing.”

They guffawed.

Then the sock stood and ran, continuing his mission to flee his overbearing mate.

Lin Jenkinson is really getting into these 50 Word Stories, and believes flash fiction will be the new entertainment. Find here at DailyTwoCents.
