KIERAN IVISON: Mitten

November 23, 2012Submissions, Touchingchild, dog, fire, Kieran Ivison, mitten, parentsTim

I lost my favorite mitten this morning.

My dog tried to eat it and choked on it. He couldn’t see very well from all the smoke in the air. My parents wouldn’t have either, but they slept through it.

Now I’m outside, and it’s really cold. I miss my mitten.

Kieran Ivison is a student attending Southeast Missouri State University. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance and a minor in Mass Communication. He also enjoys writing and randomly browsing the internet.

GARY CLIFTON: Vital Information

November 22, 2012Puns and Wordplay, Submissionsaddress, dress, Gary Clifton, punTim

“911, what is your emergency?”

“Screams coming from the house next door. Need police out here quick.”

“Do you know who lives there?”

“No, they just moved in.”

“Do you have an address?”

“No, I’m wearing shorts and a halter top. Is there a dress code for calling the cops?”

Gary Clifton, forty years a cop, has nearly 60 short fiction pieces published or pending with online sites. He has an M.S. from Abilene Christian University.

ALAN FEYKNAME: Inspiration

November 21, 2012Artistic, SubmissionsAlan Feykname, inspiration, metaphor, twistTim

One never really knows when the urge to create will strike, only that when it does it is to be seized and held for as long as it may last.

So I put down the blood-slicked knife, ignoring the groaning, flayed mess before me, and waited for it to return.

Alan is an engineering student who doesn’t think he can write but likes to do so anyway.

WENDY WHITE LEES: Once Upon a Flowerbed

November 20, 2012Amusing, Puns and Wordplay, Submissions, Touchinghappily ever after, pun, Wendy White LeesTim

I ran away with my prince to the forest.

“Stay the night with me,” he said, and laid me down on the forest floor. When we were done, I fell asleep shrouded in wildflowers.

When I woke up, he was gone. Now I no longer believe in happily heather rafters.

Wendy White Lees is a freelance writer and editor who still believes in fairy tale endings, even if she has to write them herself.

MIKE MCLAREN: Last Rose

November 16, 2012Submissions, Touchinglove, Mike McLaren, rose, suicide, tragedyTim

She held up her wrists to show the scar at the end of the world, peeled away flesh to reveal the bruises within.

He kissed her cheek, remembered when they first met—how happy they’d been—and he watched the earth cover the last rose he could ever give her.

Mike McLaren gave up teaching and technical writing to play slide blues. When not gigging, he sits in an RV somewhere in the Oregon Wilderness with a journal—his mish-mosh of stories, poems, and essays.

DOUG ROBBINS: The Visitor

November 15, 2012Amusing, Submissionsalien, anticlimax, Doug Robbins, visitorTim

A knock on my front door awakened me.

When I opened the door I saw a red fellow who stood three feet high. He asked me for a cup of sugar.

I was out of sugar.

He flew billions of light years and went home empty-handed.

Small tragedy I suppose.

Doug attends Wittenberg University. He hopes to entertain the world through the written word.

SARA JACOBELLI: Anniversary Present

November 14, 2012Amusing, Submissionschildren, cute, kidnapping, Sara JacobelliTim

“I thought you said you wanted a kid.” Brandon plopped the chubby little brown-eyed toddler into her lap.

“Yeah, but…” Marie looked nervous. She ran her fingers through the boy’s curly brown hair.

“But what?”

Marie lowered her voice to a whisper. “I didn’t know you were gonna steal one.”

Sara Jacobelli lives in New Orleans, where she tries to avoid vampires, Bourbon Street and tourists.

WENDY WHITE LEES: My Daughter’s Sundress

November 13, 2012Amusing, Submissionschildren, dress, funny, kids, messyTim

Lucy is eating her second watermelon slice. I indulge her because her sister, Rachel, is on a playdate and she’s not.

Slurp. Drip.

“Lucy, please don’t get watermelon on your dress.”

“Okay.”

Slurp. Drip. Drip.

“Lucy, I just said not to get watermelon on your dress!”

“I’m wearing Rachel’s dress.”

Wendy White Lees is a freelance writer and editor. Her two daughters fuel both her creativity and her insomnia.

ALEXIS A. HUNTER: From A to Z

November 12, 2012Amusing, Submissionsbreak-up, broken heart, drunk, mistake, tattooTim

“What’s wrong?” asked my tattoo artist.

I took another swig from the bottle. “Ann left me.”

His bloodshot eyes said he knew the feeling. “Zita walked out on me,” he confessed.

I blinked, shared the bottle.

When I woke, I found a swirling, black ‘Z’ forever inscribed on my chest.

Alexis A. Hunter specializes in short stories and flash fiction. Thankfully, she types her imaginings out now instead of scribbling them in notebooks like she did as a child.  To learn more about Alexis visit www.idreamagain.wordpress.com.

GARY CLIFTON: The Whole Truth

November 9, 2012Amusing, Submissionscheating, husband, murder, wifeTim

“You’re under arrest for the murder of your husband,” said the cop.

“But it was all his fault!”

“What did your husband say to you when you woke him up this morning?”

He said, “Where am I, Trixie?”

“And that upset you enough to shoot him?”

“My name is Margo.”
