On the bank of a river
she’s never known
gnarled roots
call her home.

Reaching out
with twisted limb,
branches of trust
sing a hymn.

Perched upon
the cypress’ knee.
Within the silence,
He whispers a plea.

Running through
His metered veins,
a thousand lost stories,
a thousand beautiful refrains.

Franklin Waters’ Life

Life on the river held steamboats, catfish, bluegrass, and plenty of other Tom Sawyerisms, too. But flash floods, sunburns, and Aunt May’s colon-clogging cornbread made life difficult for Franklin Waters.

He solved the third problem by tossing her into the first, but never got a handle on the second one.

The Adventures of Captain Scowlyface

Once upon a time, Captain Scowlyface found himself clinging to a slippery, moss-covered rock at the peak of a raging waterfall. He wasn’t happy about it, so he scowled so harshly that the river dried up , leaving behind a series of puddles that said “SORRY; PLEASE SMILE!”

But he didn’t.

@BearHawkWriter deserves credit for the title “The Adventures of Captain Scowlyface.”
