KENT OSWALD: Lives Lived Lesson

September 8, 2022Amusing, Submissionscommitment, family, funny, Kent Oswald, oops, relationshipsTim

What William heard first from grandmother was that in every woman’s heart there exists “the one that got away.”

What he heard next from grandfather was that in every man’s head there exists “the one they should have run from sooner.”

What William later heard was a big grandparent fight.

Kent Oswald teaches at CUNY and tweets at @oswalke.

GENE NEWMAN: Under Wood

September 7, 2022Amusing, Submissionsfunny, furniture, Gene Newman, politicsTim

Our lives are largely guided
by what cabinets and bureaus have decided.

Rulings from the bench, it seems
can banish hopes, puncture dreams.

Motions to the chair from the floor
have often led to civil war.

And who has such bold conceit
to ignore the power of his county seat?

Gene Newman is a retired old guy (90 yrs) and former New Jersey journalist and columnist. Read more at GeneNewmanImagineThat.com.

CYNTHIA COZETTE: Survival in Time

September 7, 2022Artistic, Submissionsaboriginal, culture, Cynthia Cozette, First Nations, indigenousTim

Cigar store statue frozen in time. War bonnet on head. Painted face unmoved. Stilted stance.

Surviving the laughter from the crowd. First Tribe. First Nations. First people known as humans.

Shopkeepers think their ways have won. Whispering winds crossing the grassy plains say they have not.

Goodness has survived time.

Cynthia Cozette is a writer, poet and contemporary classical music composer. Her recently published book is title The Forgotten Schoolhouse: Original Poems and Stories on Faith, Love, Nature and Wonder. See more at cynthiacozettelee.com.

CHARLES GRAY: Old-Time Tennis Great

September 6, 2022Adventure, Submissionsaging, Charles Gray, glory, motivation, sportsTim

It doesn’t matter if I win or lose a match anymore. It’s the sprint from the back of the court to the net, tracking down the drop shot, then smashing it crosscourt for a winner. The roar of the crowd. Fist in the air. Chills. That’s what keeps me going.

Charles is originally from New York and is now retired and resides in Texas with his wife. He likes playing chess and writing flash fiction. He has stories published at 101 Words, Microfiction Monday, Friday Flash Fiction, 50-Word Stories, The Dribble Drabble Review.

PEGGY ACOTT: Fruitcake

September 6, 2022Amusing, Submissionsfunny, murder, Peggy Acott, poison, the last strawTim

He loved fruitcake, and he always said that hers was never as good as his mother’s. Like with everything else. So, for one more time she set out the ingredients on the counter: flour, sugar, butter, pecans, raisins, arsenic, cherries, cinnamon, nutmeg and rum. Lots of rum.

She hated fruitcake.

Peggy Acott makes her home in the Pacific NW, with a partner, dog, large garden, and some would say an outrageous number of books.

Her writing includes fiction, non-fiction and poetry, along with an active journal and letter-writing practice. Her fiction has appeared both in print and online, including Spadina Literary Review, Cactus Heart Press, and PDX Writers, among others. She was co-author of the book “Portland Made: the makers of Portland’s manufacturing renaissance.” She was a semi-finalist in The Writer Magazine’s Summer 2022 Flash Fiction Contest, and is currently deep into the second draft of her first novel. See more at peggyacott.wordpress.com.

KIM MURDOCK: Decluttering by Firelight

September 5, 2022Artistic, Submissionshuman condition, Kim Murdock, nostalgia, opportunity, what ifTim

And this picture on the end table, two people, but in this light they’re two long blue shadows. Cradle it; can you feel its weight? Now rifle your memory. For the texture of skin. Contours you travelled. Odd shapes you assumed. Notice when your palms pulse like a firefly. If.

Kim Murdock writes mostly flash fiction and micro fiction. Her work has appeared in Tiny Molecules, Hungry Ghost Magazine, Blink-Ink, Ellipsis Zine, 100 Word Story, and elsewhere. Follow her on Twitter at @herselfKim.

CASEY LAINE: When You’re Alone

September 5, 2022Adventure, Amusing, SubmissionsCasey Laine, creepy, funny, mystery, shadowTim

Nameless I came into the world, and nameless I remain. Language affords no more than the barest guess of what I am.

The prickle on your skin when you’re alone. The whisper in your ear. The shadow cast off-kilter, moving on its own.

I am watching.

Better mind your manners.

Casey Laine comes from a long line of talkative women. She parlays this abundance of words into many writings: journals, poetry, and of course several novels in progress. In her spare time, she chases butterflies with her camera and walks her giant dog.

SHAI AFSAI: Separation

September 2, 2022Submissions, Touchinghope, loneliness, loss, reconciliation, relationships, Shai AfsaiTim

Making the bed alone, the sheets won’t stay in place. Besides, the double mattress we’d talked about replacing with a king feels empty. I sleep on the couch.

Around midnight, I hear the front door open. She still has her key. But there isn’t room on the couch for two.

Shai Afsai lives in Providence, Rhode Island. Enough said.

NICK YOUNG: Timepiece

September 2, 2022Artistic, Submissions, Touchinghurt, moving on, Nick Young, relationshipsTim

With steady hand and infinite care, the watchmaker positioned the final pieces, gently wound the stem, smiling with satisfaction as the intricate mechanism came to life — springs and wheels meshing with precision. Slowly removing the loupe from his eye he sighed, wishing his broken heart could be mended so easily.

Nick Young is a retired award-winning CBS News Correspondent. In addition to 50-Word Stories, writing has appeared in more than twenty publications including the Pennsylvania Literary Journal, Bookends Review, the Nonconformist Magazine, Backchannels Review, Sandpiper, the San Antonio Review, Flyover Magazine, Pigeon Review, The Best of CaféLit 11 and Vols. I and II of the Writer Shed Stories anthologies. He lives outside Chicago.
