PAUL HOCK: Just One Minute

November 21, 2018Artistic, Poetry, SubmissionsPaul Hock, poem, Remembrance DayTim

Just take a minute, it’s all we ask
We rose as one, fulfilled our task
Remember what we did and why
No need to mourn, feel guilt or cry
No need to seek revenge, or hate
Just take one minute, we can wait

Just one minute,
It’s all we ask

Paul Hock is an author, songwriter, and storyteller from Ontario, Canada. See more at paulhockpublishing.com.

TRICIA LOWTHER: Lost and Found

November 20, 2018Artistic, Submissionsremembering, Tricia Lowther, World War ITim

Charlie’s been rummaging through Great-Aunt Mary’s button box.

He holds a coin aloft. “I found treasure, Mummy!”

I take it, caress the inscription around the edge. Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, 1914. Mary’s father died at the Somme, when she was two.

Charlie shimmers expectantly.

“Yes,” I say, throat tight. “You did.”

Tricia Lowther’s flash fiction, short stories, and poetry have won or been placed in several competitions and been published in Writer’s Forum magazine, Mslexia, and Brilliant Flash Fiction amongst others. Tricia was an award winner in the UK’s Creative Future Literary Awards 2017. Find her on Twitter.

PAUL NEGRI: The Good Father

November 20, 2018Artistic, Submissionsburial, death, living on, Paul NegriTim

The ground was so hard they could not dig a grave.

“We could wait until spring,” said Jack, his toes frozen.

“Or take her someplace warmer,” said Julia, her breath frosted.

Father smiled. “Or we could build a fire.”

The children looked at each other. “Father knows best,” said Julia.

Paul Negri has twice won the gold medal for fiction in the William Faulkner-William Wisdom Writing Competition. His work has appeared in Vestal Review, The Penn Review, PIf Magazine, Penny Shorts, and many other publications. He lives and writes in Clifton, New Jersey.

RACHAEL REDGATE: Indelible

November 19, 2018Amusing, Submissions, Touchingfair, making memories, playing hookie, Rachael Redgate, schoolTim

We waited until the twittering mums at the school gates dispersed before leaping the fence.

Instead of Geography, the Ferris wheel. Candyfloss for a packed lunch. Faces painted like tigers in place of double Art.

Home, hours late. Still gleeful, until I realised I’d forgotten to wash my whiskers off.

Rachael is a teacher from Scotland.

KOJI A DAE: End Chanting

November 19, 2018Submissions, TouchingKoji A. Dae, letting go, meditation, memoryTim

Wisps of sandalwood fill my nostrils.

Dan told me the smoke would unlock my chakras and balance my soul. I sat across from him. We hummed and chanted, inhaled and exhaled. Apparently I wasn’t loud enough.

I lick my fingers and press them hard against the ember, dousing his memory.

Koji A Dae is an American writer living in Bulgaria with her husband and two children.

TONY JASNOWSKI: A Love Song for Autumn

November 16, 2018Artistic, Poetry, Submissionsautumn, fall, poem, seasons, Tony JasnowskiTim

She seduces me each September—
warm summer kisses
tasting of frost and smoke;
her voluptuous dance,
flamboyant raiment discarded
piece by piece,
revealing more and more of bewitching nakedness.
But it always ends the same—icy tears each December.
Still, I know I
will fall
with fall
in love
again.

Tony Jasnowski teaches English at Bellevue University. Can there be any doubt which season is his favorite?

RUSSELL HEMMELL: The Scavengers of Lost Time

November 16, 2018Adventure, Submissionsdystopia, Earth, ruins, Russell Hemmell, science fiction, spaceTim

Titan’s reflection on the spaceport’s panels reminded Gillian of a squeezed orange over monochrome tableware.

“Earth awaits.” The Captain pointed at the shuttle’s hatch. “I’ll retrieve artefacts and Corinthian marble. You?”

The once-Blue Planet had nothing left but ocean-ravaged megalopolis, a hunting ground for nostalgic souls.

“Seashells and broken hearts.”

Russell Hemmell is an alien from Mintaka snuggled into a (consenting) human host. Recent fiction has appeared on Aurealis, The Grievous Angel, New Myths, and elsewhere. See more at earthianhivemind.net and @SPBianchini.

MELANIE CRANENBURGH: Taking the Fun out of Funeral

November 15, 2018Amusing, Submissionsfunny, ghost, Melanie Cranenburgh, twistTim

I stand at the rear of the chapel, amongst those paying their respects. All familiar faces, yet no-one speaks to me. Too grief-stricken, perhaps?

Who chose this godawful music?

Then she appears! We haven’t spoken since she took off with my man. She has some nerve coming to my funeral!

To avoid any awkwardness at her own funeral, Melanie has pre-planned the service arrangements and music and will most likely be regularly updating her invited-guests-only list.

EILEEN CARNEY HULME: Nine Lives

November 15, 2018Artistic, SubmissionsEileen Carney Hulme, life, mystery, omens, superstition, unknownTim

Who knows why the black cat walked in front of us for two miles, occasionally looking back.

Not my cat, not yours. Just a black cat, late night walking down a three mile track.

And that disappearing trick with a mile still to go.

Eileen Carney Hulme lives in the North of Scotland. She has three full poetry collections published. See more at eileencarneyhulme.org.uk.
