PETER LI-PING: Southern Beauty

December 9, 2014Artistic, Submissionscity, descriptive, London, Peter Li-ping, urban jungleTim

The square is wild. Thousands upon thousands are moving, a restless, heaving mass of laughing humanity running under a darkened autumn sky. Red-yellow-blue neon arches over the West End, a domed canopy of electrifying energy. No jungle of a million years’ duration ever matched this complexity.

This is London Town.

Peter Li-ping is a city-dweller who feels both nervous and relaxed in the concrete jungle. Peter thinks that to feel only one thing whilst in London would be pretty weird.

LINDA NATHANIEL: Flight

December 9, 2014Amusing, Submissionscute, flying, Linda Nathaniel, odd coupleTim

A pigeon became enthralled when a bird-like design took to the skies. Sitting on the plane’s wing, the pigeon found himself in snow-capped New Zealand, some twenty hours later. It was the longest journey he had ever taken.

Ironically, hundreds of flightless penguins where there to greet him upon arrival.

Linda Nathaniel is a teacher from Sydney, Australia, who has had poems published in both Hemispheres and was once invited to the same function as Ben Stiller.

AGATA RATAJCZAK: Loyalty vs. Duty

December 8, 2014Amusing, Submissions, Top StoriesAgata Ratajczak, cute, funny, spyTim

His name was Will.

He really enjoyed spy work. The group of people he was monitoring for three weeks was interesting, and everybody loved him.

But he couldn’t say a word. He had to pretend, like his master had told him.

Nobody could know that he wasn’t a teddy bear.

Agata Ratajczak reads more than she writes, but when she writes she want to share her literary passion with others. She’s about to graduate high school.

JOEY TO: Safety Blitz

December 8, 2014Amusing, Submissionsbully, comeuppance, football, Joey To, schoolTim

Lachlan was coolest.

He could throw a ball.

He could beat up anyone.

He got dates with the hotties.

And he always managed to outsource his homework.

He tried out for quarterback one day. Fortunately for everyone else, he didn’t see the safety blitz.

Lachlan wasn’t so cool after all.

Joey wasn’t interested in writing while at school but has been writing on his own in recent years. He doesn’t mind the concept of “schoolyard justice”.

The story of the week for December 1 to 5 is Coffee Cups by Sarah Henry.

As a sort of parallel slice of life, the emotional image painted in this story is really great. Well done, Sarah!

SARA JACOBELLI: The Sound of Tinny Speakers

December 5, 2014Submissions, Touchingcute, family, homeless, sad, Sara JacobelliTim

Eviction notice; drive-in nights.

Swings and slides til the sky darkened, the movie started.

Feet crunching gravel to Poppy’s ancient Cadillac, a grand ship sailing the seven seas.

Joanie in pajamas, gulping hot dog and Coke, asked, “Is this our home now?”

Pillows, blankets, brothers, laundry, in the back seat.

Sara Jacobelli lives in New Orleans where she tries to avoid vampires, tourists, and Bourbon Street.

SARAH HENRY: Coffee Cups

December 5, 2014Submissions, Top Stories, Touchingrelationships, Sarah Henry, separation, timeTim

She rolled her empty coffee cup in her hands. In another sliver of time, he too played with his cup on a battered diner table. He was all alone in the diner; as was she, at home listening to the sounds of early morning and contemplating the inevitability of diffusion.

Sarah works as a high school teacher, and also tries to write stories.

CASEY ROBB: Apples of Bavaria

December 4, 2014Amusing, SubmissionsCasey Robb, cute, funny, special moments, travellingTim

At a Munich park, we sat and laughed together, as lonely travelers do. He bit an apple, and I took a bite of bratwurst. We toasted, clinking the sweet red apples on our juice jars, chorused “apfel,” and took a swig… then spit, and spewed… and hooted!

Deutsch: Essig!

Vinegar!

Casey Robb’s careers have included physical therapy and civil engineering. Her creative non-fiction has been published in “Texas Magazine,” and her poetry has won numerous awards and several trophies, and has been published in a variety of journals, including “The Classical Outlook,” “Ekphrasis,” “The Edge City Review,” “The Comstock Review,” and “The Lyric.” Her first short story was recently published in “Menda City Review”.

December 3, 2014Odd, SubmissionsBarry O'Farrell, farm, squatter, squattingTim

Since Jasper’s grandfather cleared land illegally to establish the farm, title couldn’t be issued.

Three generations continuously cleared land.

When an Environment Department auditor showed up to measure the clearance, Jasper shot the official dead.

Today the Environment Court seized the farm, causing Jasper more grief than his life sentence.

Barry O’Farrell is an actor living in Brisbane, Australia. He is enjoying the challenge of microfiction, with other stories appearing in A Story In 100 Words.
