On the worst day possible, sorrow came.

In great gulps of anguish, it descended upon her. One wave crashed into another with nary a pause. Her sobs were heard throughout the house—and rightfully so.

How deep the wound, how massive the pain, to be catastrophically, inexplicably out of chocolate!

It is well known across the land that Hillary does not like to be without her chocolate. She has been published in 50-Word Stories before, and most recently won a contest with Six-Word that earned her a place in the book “Crush” by Cathy Alter and Dave Singleton (released in April 2016). #1stcelebcrush

Day steamed summer perfect. Chocolate was on her mind. Not hot liquid or bars, but frosty, topped with whipped cream, crackling with ice.

She let him dip his straw to join hers, pulled in the last few drops as he tried to tug them his way.

Both, hot for chocolate.

Abby cried at Easter as a child, watching the family across the street. Grownups hid sweets around their property. Children searched. “Easter egg hunt” it was called.

Such a silly custom, Abby’s mother said.

As an adult, Abby visited her married sister, becoming the Easter bunny for nieces and nephews.

Forgotten Crime

I stared blankly at my prison’s dull, featureless walls.

This wasn’t fair. I’d been locked away for a crime I hadn’t committed. I think. Actually, the details are a bit hazy.

My probing tongue found a morsel of chocolate chip behind my tooth.

Oh, yeah… I was guilty.

Worth it.

“I’m a world-class artiste!” the actress pronounced. “I require the perfect environment to nurture my delicate muse.”

“So it’s your muse who eats six pounds of blue Smarties every day, then?” muttered her browbeaten young assistant.

“Silly boy; we don’t eat them! We throw them out the window at people.”

The World Was Made Of

The world was made of peanut butter and apples.

Actually, it wasn’t, but Kimmy would’ve been thrilled if it was. She was a daydreamer like that. Once she had thought about the world being made of chocolate and strawberries. She wasn’t sure which she’d prefer. Maybe a continent of each.
